Kainos (καινός - pronounced kye-noss) is a word from the Greek language which is often rendered "new" in English. While it can mean "new" in the sense of "never before existent," it can also carry the meaning of renewal or restoration, of something broken or tarnished being recast into its original state of wholeness. For me this is the task of counseling--coming alongside others and engaging a process of renewal; of body, mind, spirit and relational well-being. For me "kainos" is a rich and powerful word, as it contains within it a vision of what could be that is able to transcend whatever feelings of lostness, brokenness, anxiety or despair one might find themselves facing. It is certainly true that the path to wholeness is not an easy path, in that it requires investment, faith, risk, humility, willingness to admit wrong and to pursue change, and at times great perseverance. Yet the great reward that awaits those who are willing to humble themselves and to embark on this journey makes every sacrifice seem almost immaterial in the end. Are you in a place of considering this path for yourself or for someone you care about?
